Certification Classes

Lifeguard Certification Class

To enroll in the Lifeguard course, you must be at least 15 years old before the last scheduled day in the class.

Please select “Program Registration” on the left side of your screen, and follow the steps for registration.  Students have already been assigned a username, so they will need to select “Forgot Username/Password” to sign in and receive the appropriate fees.

Pre-Test

To participate in the course, you must be able to pass prerequisite skills evaluation that includes the following:

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order:
    • 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propelling kick.  Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front.
    • 100 yards of breaststroke
    • 100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke.  This 100 yards may be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke.
  2. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object within 1 minute 40 seconds.  Goggles are not allowed for this portion of the test.
  3. Tread water for 2 minutes without stopping while only using your legs.  Hands should be placed under the armpits and the head must remain above the surface of the water.

Certifications Earned Upon Successful Completion

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (valid for 2 years)
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Lifeguards (valid for 2 years)
  • American Red Cross First Aid (valid for 2 years)

CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers

The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers course is to teach those with a duty to act (professional rescuers and health care providers) the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies until more advanced medical personnel take over. This includes the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to care for a victim experiencing cardiac arrest.

  • January 13: 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. (Saturday)
  • January 16: 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. (Monday)
  • January 24: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Tuesday)
  • February 6: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Monday)
  • February 10: 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. (Friday)
  • March 3: 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. (Friday)
  • March 14: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Tuesday)
  • April 12: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (Wednesday)
  • April 15: 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. (Saturday)

American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers (valid for 2 years)

Water Safety Instructor

The purpose of the Water Safety instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics Prerequisites Be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course Possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or possess a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate Successfully complete the pretest.

Pre-Test

This course is not designed to teach you basic-level swimming skills. It is dedicated to developing the knowledge and skills you will need to plan and teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. To participate in the Water Safety Instructor course, you must be at least 16 years old and be able to demonstrate the following skills:

1. Swim the following strokes consistent with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 Stroke

Performance Criteria:

■ Front crawl—25 yards

■ Back crawl—25 yards

■ Breaststroke—25 yards

■ Elementary backstroke—25 yards

■ Sidestroke—25 yards

■ Butterfly—15 yards

2. Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).

3. Tread water for 1 minute.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (valid for 2 years)

Lifeguard Instructor

The purpose of the Lifeguard instructor course is  to train instructor candidates to teach Lifeguard Training (including First Aid), CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Management, AED Essentials, Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer, Preventing Disease Transmission, Community Water Safety and Basic Water Rescue. The training prepares instructor candidates by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials and methods, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress.

Dates:

  • August 19 (6-9 p.m.), August 20 (9 a.m. – 6 p.m.), and August 27 (9 a.m. – 6 p.m.)

Pre-test

Be at least 17 years of age by the last scheduled session of the instructor course. Pass each section of the pre-course and written exams with a score of 80 percent. Demonstrate competency in the skills evaluation.
