Our group fitness instructors are trained to deliver safe and effective workouts that produce results.  Classes are set up in a fun, social, and friendly environment.  Get fit, burn calories, get strong, and relieve stress.  It’s easy! Classes are on a Drop-In, first-come first-serve, and all skill levels are welcome!  Drop-In Group Fitness classes are free to UIC students and UIC Campus Recreation members.

Class Descriptions

Group Fitness Drop-In classes are FREE to UIC students and members of the Campus Recreation facilities.  Some classes are limited due to equipment and space requirements.  All classes are on a first come, first serve basis. Classes vary per semester and are offered at both the Student Recreation Facility and the Sport & Fitness Center.  Visit www.rec.uic.edu for current class schedule.

Bootcamp: This class is for anyone looking for a fun and challenging workout. Instructors will incorporate interval training, circuit stations, and athletic drills. Basic body-weight and resistance exercises, coupled with bursts of cardio will ensure a balanced workout guaranteed to make you sweat!

Cardio Kick: Jab, hook and kick your way through this heart pounding workout. This class combines easy to follow choreography with a focus on technique, balance and control.

Cardio Sculpt: Get your cardio and strength training done in this hour long class. Blast through cardio drills, plyometric, kickboxing and more with intervals of strength training using body weight, bands, dumbbells and more!

Cycle Express: 40-50 minutes of action packed cycling. Designed for those who are short on time, but high on motivation! Get ready for a great ride!

Cycling: This hour long cycling class is guaranteed to make you sweat. Build cardiovascular endurance while climbing hills and racing on flat roads.

Dance Fit: Burn calories and tone your body in this class that combines different dance styles into a great workout. Get fit while having a blast!

Fit Camp: Do you want to improve your overall fitness? Fit Camp workouts will vary each week from HIIT, circuits, intervals and more to keep your mind and body guessing at what’s coming next.

Flex: This is a simple, easy-to-follow, yet demanding class that will tone up every major body part, including those muscles sometimes forgotten about! Equipment options for this class may include: the step, stability balls, dumbbells, bands and bars, used with controlled and slow movements to tone and strengthen.

Hard Core: Get ready to strengthen your core and tighten your abs for better functional strength with this class. Focusing on the abdominals, obliques, and lower back muscles, you will challenge the powerhouse of your body in just 30 minutes!

HIIT & Kick: What do you get when you combine high intensity interval training with cardio kick? HIIT & KICK! This challenging workout will combine high intensity intervals with cardio kick boxing.

Kick N Core: Get the best of Cardio Kick and Hard CORE! This class will start with 45 minutes of Cardio Kick and round out the workout with core work and a relaxing stretch.

Lower Body Blast: Using a variety of strength training equipment, this class will focus on strengthening the glutes and legs. Squat & lunge your way to power.

Rise N Cycle: This invigorating early morning cycling class will leave you inspired and ready to face your day with confidence and vigor!

Synrgy: Synrgy 360 takes your workout into a functional training workout incorporating muscle strength and endurance, cardiovascular intervals, and core and flexibility training. Using the Synrgy 360 equipment, circuit training stations will be set up using TRX, kettlebells, medicine balls, boxing, battle ropes, body weight training and more. Sign up in advance at the Sport & Fitness Center Membership Desk.

Total Body Workout: Have only an hour to get your workout in? No problem! This high intensity class combines various types of cardio and strength training exercises to firm you up and slim you down! An excellent full body workout followed by core training.

Become A Fitness Instructor

Teaching group fitness is fun and rewarding!  Campus Recreation offers a one-day Instructor Training Workshop for UIC students interested in learning to become a Group Fitness Instructor.  Previous teaching experience is not required, but participation in a variety of group fitness classes like kickboxing, step, etc., is recommended.  Participants must be enthusiastic about group fitness!

About the Course

Learn the basics of teaching group fitness classes (in all different formats and varieties) in a lecture/workshop and team teaching format.
