Student Employee Positions
Introduction
Recreation and Wellbeing employs students across 3 facilities:
- Sport and Fitness Center (SFC) 828 S. Wolcott Avenue
- Student Recreation Facility (SRF) 737 S. Halsted Street
- Outdoor Field Complex (OFC) 900 W. 14th Place
Some positions may be specific to that facility and is noted on the Handshake application.
Promotion positions are required to have some level of residency in Recreation and Wellbeing to apply. Applicants who do not meet these requirements will be declined.
All applications must be submitted via Handshake.

Positions by Area
Lifeguard
Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, the Lifeguard responsibilities include:
- Supervising daily operations in both the Sport and Fitness Center and Student Recreation Facility Natatoriums
- Supervising swimmers and participants in the pool, steam room, sauna, and spa
- Ensuring the safety and security of the facility by enforcing Natatorium policies
- Perform hourly chemical checks
- Performing various cleaning tasks, as assigned
Basic Requirements:
- Must have a current American Red Cross, YMCA, or Jeff Ellis and Associates Lifeguard Certification
- Confident in all lifeguarding, CPR, and first aid skills
- Effective communication skills and a positive attitude
- Excellent customer service skills
- Be a team player and work well under pressure
Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Under the direct and limited supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, the Water Safety Instructors responsibilities include:
- Providing private or group lessons for participants of the UIC Swim Program at both the Sport and Fitness Center and Student Recreation Facility Natatoriums.
- Prepare and conduct safe and effective water instruction
– Complete a consultation of swimming competency upon students’ first lesson
– Understand the current and desired swimming level of the student
– Demonstrate the swimming strokes and skills
- Maintain proper documentation of lessons
- Ensure proper communication with students and their families
Basic Requirements:
- Must have a current American Red Cross Water Safety Certification
- Confident and effective leadership skills

Lifeguard Instructor (LGI)
The Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) works under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, the LGI will teach courses at the UIC Student Recreation Facility and Sport and Fitness Center.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Train and develop qualified participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies
- Train and develop qualified participants to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel arrive and take over
- Instruct courses in all appropriate levels of CPR, First Aid, and other classes as assigned by the Aquatics Coordinator
- Evaluate proficiencies of all participants and make a pass/fail determination for each student. Accurate course records, including pass/fail notification must be provided to the Aquatics Coordinator upon conclusion of a course
- Provide entry-level, renewal, and challenge courses as assigned by the Aquatics Coordinator. These courses may include, but are not limited to:
- Lifeguarding
- CPR – Professional Rescuer
- CPR – Lay Responder (Adult, Child, and Infant)
- First Aid
- Blood Borne Pathogens
- Other safety courses which they are certified to teach
- LGI will assist as co-facilitator for mandatory departmental lifeguard in-services:
- Assist the Aquatics Coordinator in reviewing skills related to water rescue and CPR
- Evaluate and provide feedback to in-service participants encouraging skill development and continuous learning
- Follow American Red Cross Standards in all courses, including:
- Proper instructor to student ratios (no more than 10 students per instructor)
- Include all lesson material in the provided lesson plans for each course
- Properly preparing all course materials and lesson plans prior to the course
Qualifications:
The candidate must have a nationally recognized Lifeguard Instructor Certification
Successful completion of fundamentals of instructor training course
Must be proficient in demonstrating and instructing all American Red Cross water rescue skills
Must be proficient in providing instruction of all levels of CPR, AED, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogen Training
Must have the ability to pass all physical perquisites for lifeguarding as required by the American Red Cross
Student Building Supervisor
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities, the Building Supervisor position is a three-month training period required to be promoted to a building manager. The Building Supervisors responsibilities include:
- Assisting the Building Manager in Supervising the Student Recreation Facility which includes opening and closing procedures
- Overseeing the entire student staff to ensure all areas are covered
- Ensuring the safety and security of the facility by enforcing all policies and procedures
- Perform first aid and CPR when needed
Basic Requirements:
- **Promotion Position** Must be actively employed in Recreation and Wellbeing to be eligible to apply.

Student Building Manager
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities, the Building Managers responsibilities include:
- Supervising the Student Recreation Facility which includes opening and closing procedures
- Training the Building Supervisor
- Responsible for processing reports (incident, injury, theft and daily)
- Overseeing the entire student staff to ensure all areas are covered
- Ensuring the safety and security of the facility by enforcing all policies and procedures
- Perform first aid and CPR when needed
Basic Requirements:
- Must have one semester employment as a building supervisor
- Must be sophomore status with the University
- Must have current CPR certification
- Effective communication skills and a positive attitude
- Excellent customer service skills
- Be a team player and work well under pressure
- Work at least one opening OR closing shift AND one weekend shift per week
Climbing Wall Attendant
Under the direct supervision of the Climbing Wall and Outdoor Adventure Coordinator, the Climbing Wall Attendant responsibilities include:
- Enforcing policies and procedures to provide safe management and operation of the Climbing Wall
- Demonstrating a thorough understanding of belay and spotting techniques
- Providing an inclusive environment and great customer service to all patrons
- Instructing basic rock climbing and belaying techniques to patrons of all ages
- Assisting the Professional Staff with patron inquires
Basic Requirements:
- Must pass an internal belay test.
- Effective communication skills and a positive attitude
- Excellent customer services skills
- Flexibility to work special events, birthday parties and kid’s programs on hours other than normal operating hours

Facilities Attendant
Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Coordinator, the Facility Attendants responsibilities include:
- Providing customer service to all members and visitors of UIC Recreation and Wellbeing
- Checking out equipment and ensuring the equipment is in good condition when returned
- Assists the professional staff with facility maintenance
- Assists the professional staff with special events set-up
- Perform light clerical duties as assigned

Fitness Attendant
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of FitWell and Graduate Assistant, the Fitness Attendant responsibilities include:
- Possess a working knowledge of all cardiovascular and strength equipment
- Demonstrate the safe and proper usage of all cardiovascular training equipment
- Provide spotting when necessary
- Ensure a safe workout environment by enforcing policy and procedures
- Document and report any equipment maintenance issues
- Maintaining the equipment by checking and cleaning them regularly
- Other duties as assigned

FitWell Attendant
Under the direct and limited supervision of the Personal Training Coordinator, the FitWell Lab Attendant responsibilities include:
- Making appointments for laboratory testing and massage therapy
- Ensuring that all documentation is kept confidential
- Understanding and clearly communicating policies and procedures of the personal training, fitness testing and massage therapy programs and services
- Tracking sessions and payments
- Maintaining FitWell massage equipment and selecting, storing, issuing, and restocking equipment and towels as needed

- Must have a current American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR/AED Certification or be certified within the first three months of employment

FitWell Lab Technician
Under the direct and limited supervision of the Personal Training Coordinator, Lab Technician responsibilities include:
- Screen clients to ensure they are able to safely participate in exercise testing
- Administration of fitness testing services provided by the FitWell Lab utilizing correct and established protocols for each test.
- Calibrate and clean equipment to ensure test is as accurate as possible
- Explain results and significance of test
- Ensure that all documentation is accurate and confidential
- Explain to each incoming client the policies and procedures of the personal training /fitness testing program and services.
Basic requirements:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Excellent customer service, communication skills and positive team dynamics
- Pursuing bachelor degree in exercise science or related field preferred
- No prior work experience necessary

Personal Training
Under the direct and limited supervision of the Personal Training Coordinator, Personal Trainer responsibilities include:
- Conduct consultations and fitness assessments with clients and discuss results
- Developing and implementing a specialized exercise program for clients and monitoring their success
- Maintaining accurate paperwork for clients and their sessions
- Explaining and enforcing safety rules and regulations governing training activities and the use of exercise equipment
- Ensure that the exercise equipment is in good condition and report any issues/concerns to the Coordinator of the HPL
Basic requirements:
- National Certification or UIC In House Certification
- Must have a current American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR/AED Certification or be certified within the first three months of employment
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications for Word and Excel as well as have access to and use email applications
- Ability to lift and move supplies and equipment weighing up to 50lbs. or more
- Excellent customer service, communication skills and positive team dynamics
Group Fitness Instructor
Under the direct and limited supervision of the Group Fitness Coordinator, the Fitness Instructors responsibilities include:
- Providing Fitness programs that meet patron needs and aspirations by designing safe, well-balanced classes, which can be adapted to meet different fitness and skill levels at both the Sport and Fitness Center and Student Recreation Facility
- Observing participants and providing corrective measures necessary for safety and skill improvement
- Checking equipment and reporting any repairs or replacement needs to the Group Fitness Coordinator
- Explaining and enforcing safety rules and policies
- Maintaining exercise equipment inventories and selecting, storing and issuing equipment as needed
Basic requirements:
- Must have a current American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR/AED Certification or be certified within the first three months of employment
- Previous group fitness class experience is required; Prior teaching experience is recommended, but not required
- Successful completion of UIC In-House Fitness Instructor Training Program
- Successful completion of audition and interview process
- Exhibit leadership skills in an outgoing, assertive, and professional manner
- Flexibility to work different shifts and substitute when needed
F45 Instructor
Under direction supervision of the Assistant Director FitWell, the F45 Instructor responsibilities and duties include:
- Assisting with supervision of the F45 Coaches
- Training and onboarding new hires
- Provide feedback and constructive criticism to coaches and occasionally group fitness instructors
- Model coaching skills through teaching one F45 class per week
- Market FitWell programs digitally and in-person at events
- Provide excellent customer service following Campus Recreation service model
Basic Requirements

Intramural Official
Under the direct supervision of the Intramural Sports Coordinator, the Intramural Official responsibilities include:
- Officiate Intramural games and tournaments
- Set up and take down for scheduled games and tournaments
- Mediate conflicts and official protests in conjunction with all rules, regulations, and policies of the Intramural Sports program
- Assist with the development and implementation of all rules, regulations, and policies of the Intramural Sports program
- Maintain intramural sports equipment
- Assist Professional Staff with special events

Intramural Supervisor
Under the direct supervision of the Intramural Sports Coordinator, the Intramural Supervisor responsibilities include:
- Officiate Intramural Sport Tournaments
- Supervise tournaments and games
- Evaluate student officials
- Assist the Professional Staff with special programs

- Must be available to work evenings and some weekends
- **Promotional Position** Must have worked as an Intramural Official for at least 1 year
E-Sports Attendant
Under the direct supervision of the Intramural Sports Coordinator the Esports Attendant will oversee the daily operations of the Esports Gaming Area, which includes managing a PC gaming section with 14 computers and a console gaming area featuring systems such as Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, and Nintendo Switch with multiple game titles for each platform. This position ensures the Esports area remains a safe, welcoming, and organized space for participants while maintaining all equipment and providing customer service to students and guests.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Area Supervision:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Esports Gaming Area, including the PC and console sections.
- Enforce rules, policies, and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all participants.
- Address and resolve participant disputes or concerns professionally.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Monitor all equipment, including PCs, consoles, controllers, headsets, and gaming peripherals, to ensure proper functionality.
- Perform basic troubleshooting for hardware and software issues on PCs and gaming consoles.
- Notify supervisors of any equipment malfunctions or replacement needs.
Customer Service:
- Provide assistance to participants by setting up games, troubleshooting equipment, and explaining rules or usage guidelines.
- Maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for all users, regardless of gaming skill level or experience.
- Respond to inquiries about the Esports area, including available games, hours of operation, and policies.
Area Organization and Cleanliness:
- Ensure the gaming area remains clean, organized, and free of hazards.
- Properly store and secure all equipment at the end of each shift.
Programming Support:
- Assist in setting up and managing tournaments, leagues, and events hosted in the Esports area.
- Promote Esports programs and events to increase participation and engagement.
Record Keeping:
- Track equipment usage and participant attendance in the Esports area.
- Report any incidents or significant issues to supervisors in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
- Familiarity with PC gaming hardware and software, including popular games and platforms (e.g., Steam, Epic Games).
- Knowledge of console gaming systems (Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, Nintendo Switch) and associated games.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with participants effectively.
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to handle technical issues related to gaming equipment.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative to maintain a positive gaming environment.
Member Services Attendant
Under the direct supervision of the Member Services Coordinator, the Member Services Attendant responsibilities include:
- Provide customer service to all members and visitors of Recreation and Wellbeing
- Selling and processing Recreation and Wellbeing memberships, guest passes, and Pro-Shop items
- Assisting the Professional Staff with patron inquires
- Checking in non-members for programs and services
- Overseeing entry policies at control desk
- Enforcing facility entrance policies
- Perform light clerical duties as assigned
Basic Requirements:
- Effective communication skills and a positive attitude
- Excellent customer service skills
- Be a team player and work well under pressure
- Work at least one opening OR closing shift AND one weekend shift per week
Member Services Supervisor
Under the direct supervision of the Member Services Coordinator, the Member Services Supervisors responsibilities include:
- Supervising the membership desk
- Training new hires
- Restocking pro shop items, forms and other items
- Provide customer service to all members and visitors of UIC Campus Recreation
- Process all UIC Campus Recreation memberships, membership cancellations and UIC visitor icards
- Provide patrons with refunds when needed
- Assisting the Professional Staff with patron inquires
- Checking in non-members for programs and services
- Enforcing facility entrance policies
- Special Projects and light clerical duties as assigned

OFC Supervisor
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Programs and Services, the Outdoor Field Supervisor responsibilities include:
- Supervising the outdoor fields complex (OFC)
- Enforce all policies of the OFC to maintain a safe environment
- Conduct equipment set – up and break down for scheduled events
- Provide customer service to all members and visitors
- Be knowledgeable of facility schedule and set up needs for events
- Complete nightly facility reports and submit to Assistant Director of Programs and Services
- Complete accurate incident and accident reports and submit them to the Assistant Director of Programs and Services

Social Media
To create and publish content on all Recreation and Wellbeing social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Tik Tok, and Twitter to grow an audience, build awareness, and ultimately, promote Recreation and Wellbeing. We are looking for someone who is:
- Passionate about social media
- Experienced in social media, social media strategy and implementation, graphic design (Canva/Adobe Photoshop), reel creation, and video editing
- Up to date with current social media trends
- Personable, creative, and good with time management
- Comfortable working 0-6 hours per week
- Comfortable attending events in the evenings and on weekends
Street Team
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Programs and Services, the Street Team employee responsibilities include:
- to engage students on campus through activities designed to promote Recreation and Wellbeing programs and or services
- This position is responsible for bringing RecWell style excitement to campus. The role of the Street Team is to engage students on campus through recreation and leisure style games.
- Promoting Recreation and Wellbeing to those who may not already be aware of our programs; the goals of the team are to increase awareness and participation by these unrepresented groups.
- Members of the team will be required to plan events in busy areas during the school day. However, some evening and weekend work may be required.
