Stay Well — Respiratory Illness & Mpox Awareness

As winter approaches and public health trends shift, we encourage our campus community to remain vigilant for a range of infectious illnesses — including seasonal respiratory illnesses and Mpox.

Why This Matters

  • The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) has reported an increase in mpox cases in Chicago.

  • Mpox is caused by a virus that spreads primarily through close, skin-to-skin or prolonged face-to-face contact, or by contact with contaminated clothing, bedding or linens.

  • Like respiratory illnesses (e.g., flu, colds, COVID-19), mpox — and other transmissible infections — can spread more easily in shared indoor spaces, underscoring the importance of consistent hygiene and preventive practices.

How You Can Protect Yourself & Others

  • Practice good hand hygiene. Wash hands often with soap and water (or use hand-sanitizer when soap isn’t available), especially before eating, after using the restroom, or after touching shared surfaces. Proper handwashing (scrubbing for at least 20 seconds) is one of the most effective ways to reduce spread.

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes — and avoid touching your face. Respiratory droplets can spread viruses.

  • Avoid close or intimate contact (hugging, kissing, sharing bedding or towels, or sharing personal items) if either person is sick or has unexplained sores, rashes, or skin lesions. This helps reduce risk of mpox or other infections.

  • Get vaccinated if eligible. Mpox is preventable with a two-dose vaccine for those at risk. Seasonal vaccines for flu (and COVID-19, where applicable) are also strongly recommended. Vaccines are available at clinics throughout Chicago.

  • Stay home if you’re feeling unwell. If you have symptoms — whether fever, cough, rash, or other signs of illness — please avoid coming to campus until you’re well. Seek medical advice/testing if needed.

If you have symptoms or questions about where to get care or vaccines, contact phinitiatives@uic.edu for guidance.

Flyers, posters, and social-media graphics (in multiple languages) are available — ideal for posting in common areas (e.g., bathrooms, message boards, student-high-traffic zones).

Together, we can help keep our campus healthy — one clean hand and responsible action at a time.
