The purpose of the Water Safety instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics Prerequisites Be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course Possess a Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certificate issued within the last year or possess a current national Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization Certificate Successfully complete the pretest.

Location: Student Recreation Facility (737 S. Halsted St.)
Pre-Test
This course is not designed to teach you basic-level swimming skills. It is dedicated to developing the knowledge and skills you will need to plan and teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. To participate in the Water Safety Instructor course, you must be at least 16 years old and be able to demonstrate the following skills:
- Swim the following strokes consistent with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 StrokePerformance Criteria:
■ Front crawl—25 yards■ Back crawl—25 yards■ Breaststroke—25 yards■ Elementary backstroke—25 yards■ Sidestroke—25 yards
■ Butterfly—15 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
- Tread water for 1 minute.
Certification Earned Upon Successful Completion
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (valid for 2 years)
